Primary Purpose

Provides wound care to patients to decrease complications, speed healing time, and assist in

maximum recovery for patients.

 

It is a PRN position, and the shift, is 7:30-4:00 Monday - Friday.  The PRN staff needs to be available on any of these 5 days, when the need arises for coverage. 

 

Education

• Must have two years' experience in a medical/surgical environment; OR,

• Must hold a current certified nurse aide registry; OR

• Must hold a current medical assistant certificate; OR

• Must be a currently enrolled in an accredited school of professional nursing and must have

documentation of basic fundamentals of nursing from the school; OR

• Must successfully complete Parkland’s 8-week job specific training program

 

Experience

• Previous experience as a wound care technician preferred.

 

Certification/Registration/Licensure

• Must have current heartsaver provider CPR course completion card within 30 days of hire

from:

• American Heart Association

• American Red Cross Rescuer

 

Skills or Special Abilities

• Must be able to successfully complete all department assigned competencies.

• Must be able to read, write and communicate effectively with patients, families, medical staff

and hospital personnel.

• Must be able to document care given in the medical record.

• Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/patient valued behaviors.

• Must have good fine motor and manual dexterity skills.

 

Responsibilities

• Responsible for patient care with nurse, therapists or provider to include: wound cleansing,

wound care, bandaging, compression therapy, obtaining wound cultures and using universal

precautions and other isolation procedures.

• May remove and apply negative pressure wound therapy as directed by the nurse or provider.

• May screen patients and communicate with other areas including therapists, nurses and

providers as required by the specific department.

• Provide support, counseling and discharge education reinforcement to patients and family

members.

• Transfers and assists patients: may provide basic patient care and hygiene.

• Assists therapists, providers and nurses with treatments and procedures. When instructed

may perform vital signs, place offloading boots or assist with management of devices like

casts, compression garments, catheters or feeding tubes.

• Monitors condition of wounds, escalating changes when appropriate, and documents care of

wounds.

• Assists with instruction and training of new employees or students.

• Stocks and distributes supplies, manages inventory, and completes charges as directed for

the area.

• Takes equipment to be maintained/certified if needed.

• Track data and participate in quality projects as requested by leadership.

• May carry pager and dispatch staff to high priority locations depending upon the specific area

of practice.

• May monitor system lists or appointment schedules to help prioritize patient care.

1. Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes

recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in

support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.

2. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by

attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in

professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates

knowledge gained into current work practices.

3. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that

impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with

applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health

plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
