Primary Purpose

Maintains trauma registry data entry and applicable coding for reporting to the American College of Surgeons and State of of Texas for maintenance of Level 1 Trauma verification and designation.

 

Shift: Monday-Friday 6:00 AM-2:00 PM

 

Education

•High school degree or equivalent.

 

Experience

•Must have two years of experience working with electronic medical records; or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

•Must have two years of experience working medical terminology; or, equivalent combination of education and experience.

 

Certification/Registration/Licensure

•Preferred CAISS or CSTR.

 

Skills or Special Abilities

•Must be able to solve fairly complex mathematical problems.

•Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of personal computers, data entry procedures, and medical terminology.

•Must be able to communicate effectively with employees, medical staff, and administrative personnel.

•Must be able to learn ICD-10 codes and injury severity scoring.

 

Responsibilities

1.Ensures trauma data forms are complete, and enters information into the trauma registry computer system to ensure comprehensive reporting to the American College of Surgeons, State agencies, and Parkland management.

2.Assigns abbreviated injury scores and ICD-10 codes to each trauma diagnosis, accurately calculates injury severity score, and enters statistics for American College of Surgeons and State registry reporting to ensure maintenance of Level 1 Trauma certification.

3.Assigns ICD-10 codes for applicable trauma procedures.

4.Analyzes trauma sticker sheets. admission reports, transfer reports, and death logs to identify all trauma cases treated at Parkland to ensure maximum recovery of billable amounts and applicable registry entry.

5.Reviews autopsy reports by the Medical Examiner's Office to determine trauma related injuries and cause of death.

6.Completes monthly trauma registry audits to ensure compliance with the American College of Surgeons requirements.

7.Performs administrative support duties as needed to ensure the efficiency of departmental workflow.

8.Maintains knowledge of all the rules, regulations, laws, guidelines that impact or govern the Trauma Registry and ensures that Parkland is in compliance.

9.Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in trauma registry by attending seminars and workshops, reading internal publications, and integrating this knowledge as appropriate into the job.

10.Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer (internal as well as external) satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals and mission of the PHHS.

11.Maintains a positive working relationship with physicians, nurses, and other hospital personnel to ensure maximum cooperation and efficiency within the area.

  • Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
  • Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
