Primary Purpose

Prepares operating rooms for surgery, provides technical services, assists during routine to complex

surgeries, and maintains documentation to ensure activities meet OR, and PHHS requirements.

 

Education

• Requirements for Practicing Surgical Technology in the State of Texas (per Texas H.B. 643-Chapter

259): Education/Certification:

• Has successfully completed an accredited educational program for surgical Technologist and holds and

maintains certification as a surgical technologist by:

• the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting or its successor;

• the National Center for Competency Testing or its successor;

• another surgical technologist certification program approved by the department; OR

• Has completed an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the Army, Navy, Air Force,

Marine Corps, or Coast Guard of the United States or in the United States Public Health Service.

 

Experience

• Main OR – Must have two years of experience in an operating room/healthcare environment or

demonstrated proficiency in 6 services.

• ASC – Must have two years of experience in an operating room/healthcare environment or

demonstrated proficiency in 4 services.

 

Certification/Registration/Licensure

• In addition to State of Texas requirements (above)

• Must have current healthcare provider CPR course completion card from one of the following:

• American Heart Association

• American Red Cross Rescuer

• Military Training Network.

 

Skills or Special Abilities

• Must be able to demonstrate a basic working knowledge of surgical equipment, instruments and

procedures.

• Must be able to set priorities and perform under stressful situations.

• Must be able to demonstrate knowledge in use of aseptic techniques.

• Must be able to recognize and correct immediately any breaks in aseptic technique.

• Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.

• Must be able to work a change in shift, or flexible hours when the work requires such changes.

• Must be able to communicate effectively with hospital staff.

• Must be able to demonstrate patient-centered/patient-valued behaviors.

 

Responsibilities

1. Meets and greets patients awaiting surgery to ensure Operating Room activities meet the needs of

the patient.

2. Assists the surgical team during routine and complex operative procedures by functioning in a scrub

role or circulating under the direct supervision of a RN, ensuring activities meet the needs of the

team.

3. Sets up and prepares rooms with the appropriate instruments, sutures, supplies and equipment and

cleans rooms or equipment as necessary to ensure the rooms are set up to meet the needs of the

surgical procedures. Utilizes basic knowledge of sterile and surgical techniques by practicing aseptic

techniques.

4. Serves as a resource in the area of clinical expertise to Surgical Technologist I’s in order to answer any

questions and assist with routine situations.

5. Communicates patient data in an accurate, objective manner, to coworkers and management, in

order to ensure safe patient care.

6. Maintains a positive working relationship with patients, medical and administrative hospital staff,

visiting physicians, visitors, interns, and students to ensure to the personal comfort and safety of

patients, and that Operating Room activities meet the needs of users.

7. Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes

recommendations to supervisor, implements and monitors results as appropriate in support of the

overall goals of the department and PHHS.

8. Demonstrates (via surgical practice) knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and

guidelines that impact the Operating Room area. Develops effective internal controls that promote

adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies

and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice as necessary to ensure proper

understanding.

9. Provides training and orientation to new employees and students as required.

10. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of Surgical

Technology by attending in-service training, seminars/workshops, reading professional journals and

maintaining certification. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.

recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of

the overall goals of the department and Parkland.

2. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending

seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional

organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into

current work practices.

3. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact

the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable

laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks

advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
