PRIMARY PURPOSE Supervises department and/or support staff to ensure effective and efficient operation of support functions. Performs supervision of area activities, assigns schedules, adjusts manpower, generates reports, and completes special projects as required in order to provide and maintain proper service levels. This position reports to a manager or above.
Minimum Specifications
Education
- Must have a High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
Experience
- - At least 5 years experience in prior pharmacy technician health system roles such as inpatient pharmacy, IV/Infusion pharmacy, retail pharmacy, mail order pharmacy, correctional health pharmacy, and/or pharmacy repackaging.
Certification/Registration/Licensure
- Must have a current Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification by exam from the National Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCE) or the National Healthcare Association (ExCPT).
- Must have current registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy.
- Failure to pass examination or comply with primary requirements will result in termination or the opportunity to apply for a posted non-pharmacy technician position with Parkland.
Skills or Special Abilities
- Must be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of a PC, and be able to learn and use new software.
- Must be able to pass Pharmacy math and spelling test with a minimum score of 80%.
- Must successfully complete the necessary training requirements to perform cashier duties within 90 days from initial employment.
- Must be able to demonstrate basic computer skills for area of responsibility.
- Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills in the operation of equipment used in primary practice area.
- Must be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of different types of drugs.
- Must be able to demonstrate basic knowledge of medical and health care terminology.
- Must be able to demonstrate patient centered/patient valued care.
Responsibilities
- 1. Assists in the selection, training, and supervision for assigned staff to ensure maximum utilization of individual and group capabilities, while providing optimal service to internal and external customers. Effectively delegates responsibilities. Responsible for operational practices that deliver effective and efficient services and ensure optimal patient outcomes. Collaborates with clinical & operational support, medical staff and administration to assess operations and evaluate quality. Identifies and analyzes work processes implementing appropriate changes to improve effectiveness, productivity and efficiency and patient access. Provides input as needed for position evaluations.
- 2. Monitors daily workload and operations and identifies critical issues to prioritize and communicate to appropriate personnel.
- 3. Provides direction and training to new and existing technician staff
- 4. Assists the pharmacy manager in supervision of workflow, observation of appropriate procedures and staff productivity.
- 5. Assists in supervision and responsibility of keeping all area functions and spaces within regulatory and compliance requirements.
- 6. May perform work or quality audits of operational functions. Assists in quality, safety and performance improvement related projects.
- 7. Develops and maintains the technician schedule in coordination with the pharmacy manager
- 8. Able to perform all the operational functions and operate all equipment and computer systems used in the work area of pharmacy technician. Can serve as lead trainer and mentor for new staff.
- 9. If the work area has cash operations, and assists with training staff on entering correct charges, collecting accurate amounts of money and giving correct change to customers to ensure that payment is received for purchases.
- 10. If the work area, has cash operations, prepares for each shift by obtaining and inserting the correct amount of cash in the appropriate cash register and ensure that the workstation is ready to service customers when the shift begins.
- 11. If the work area, has cash operations, delivers remaining cash receipts and completed/approved reports to the manager, after each shift, while following established policies and procedures to ensure that all monies are secured and accounted for when the shift ends.
- 12. Assists in the inventory and PAR management, maintenance of various inventory records, invoices and other required documents.
- 13. Assists in the maintenance of assigned areas, including cleanliness, drug and supply inventory, equipment, and simple repair to ensure that pharmacy areas are clean, operational, contain the necessary supplies, and are free from obstacles.
- 14. Acts as a resource person for non-judgmental pharmacy questions to medical staff, patients, and visitors.
- 15. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the Pharmacy area, to include cashiering operations. Maintains licensure as a Nationally Certified Pharmacy Technician. Adheres to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
- 16. Adheres to all Parkland procedures and house standards.

- 2. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
- 3. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
