PRIMARY PURPOSE Supervises the work of assigned staff, performing quality assurance, maintaining policies and procedures, and supplies and inventory, performing gross tissue and microscopic examinations to ensure Parkland complies with regulatory guidelines.

 

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS

Education

- Must have a High School diploma or GED equivalent.

 

Experience

- Must have six (6) years working experience as a registered histology technician.

- Previous supervisor or lead tech experience preferred.

 

Equivalent Education and/or Experience

- May have an equivalent combination of education and experience to substitute for the experience requirements.

 

Certification/Registration/Licensure

- Must be HT (ASCP) or HTL (ASCP) certified.

 

Skills or Special Abilities

- Must be able to demonstrate an advanced knowledge of histologic equipment used to perform both routine and specialized procedures in order to appropriately operate, maintain, and troubleshoot all related histologic equipment. - Must be able to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing with all levels of internal and external personnel.

- Must be able to demonstrate an advanced in-depth knowledge of all histologic procedures and techniques, both routine and specialized.

- Must be able to demonstrate the ability to train and supervise staff level personnel.

- Must demonstrate ability to coordinate and direct all laboratory procedures in area of responsibility.

- Must demonstrate good decision making skills.

 

Responsibilities

1. Selects, trains, and evaluates assigned staff to ensure maximum utilization of individual and group capabilities, while providing optimal service to internal and external customers. Ensures that assigned employees receive opportunities to further their knowledge.

2. Oversees the preparation of all levels of gross tissue specimens for microscopic examination by pathologist, including surgical, autopsy, research and outside cases. Performs duties of Histology Technician utilizing advanced skill as needed to ensure proper coverage and administration of services.

3. Trains, interviews, provides orientation and motivation to staff, personnel scheduling, and time and attendance. May assign staff to projects to ensure maximum utilization of individual and group capabilities.

4. Serves as a lead resource to Parkland personnel, other hospitals, vendors, physicians, etc., maintaining positive working relationships with management and employees to ensure cooperation and administration of services.

5. Performs quality assurance and maintenance on equipment to ensure accurate workload reporting to provide documentation for regulation standards. Troubleshoots technical problems.

6. Assists with ordering and maintaining supplies and equipment, and/or preparing purchase requests.

7. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Histology area. Assists with the review and updates of laboratory manuals covering area of responsibility on an ongoing basis. Reviews quality of test and/or procedures performed to ensure result accuracy. Follows internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding, and reports any unethical or fraudulent behavior.

8. Oversees research activities by coordinating Institutional Review Board (IRB) approved research studies with the Pathology Research Coordinator ensuring research requests are completed and billed properly.

9. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements and trends in the field of Anatomic Pathology by attending seminars or workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and maintaining certification as a Histology Technician, integrating this knowledge as appropriate into the job.

10. Identifies and analyzes the design of jobs, work processes/flows for Anatomic Pathology and recommends implementation of appropriate changes to improve work effectiveness, productivity, and efficiency that support the overall goals of Parkland.
