PRIMARY PURPOSE Provides Spanish language medical interpretation, in person or by video/phone for patients, family members, and medical staff for Parkland's full scope of services. Provides Spanish language translation for clinical and non-clinical documents, records, and communications across Parkland's full scope of services.

 

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS

 

Education

- Must have a High School diploma or GED.

 

Experience

- Must have two (2) years of experience as a qualified medical interpreter.

 

Equivalent Education and/or Experience

- None.

 

Certification/Registration/Licensure

- Prefer Medical Interpreter National Certification (NBCMI or CCHI). Required Tests for Placement

- Clinical Spanish Screening Exam must be passed with a 75% or higher (waived if already nationally certified, qualified medical interpreter, or already has qualifying clinical proficiency exam scores on file.

- Clinical Spanish proficiency exam:

- Must achieve 'Clinical' designation in 'Overall Language Proficiency'

- Clinical Spanish proficiency exam:

- Must achieve 'Clinical' or 'Non-clinical' designation in 'Overall Writing Proficiency'

- Garcia Shilling Test Scores of 80% or above in Oral, Medical Terminology, and Writing may be substituted for the clinical Spanish proficiency exam if already on file.

 

Skills or Special Abilities

- Must be able to successfully complete intensive Medical Interpreter/Translator Qualification Training Program

- Achieves 'Clinical' designation in 'Overall Writing Proficiency' by end of training program.

- Adheres to the Medical Interpreter Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice

- Speaks, reads, and writes both clinical English and Spanish.

- Communicates effectively, both orally and in writing, with patients, families, and hospital staff.

- Demonstrates patient centered/patient valued behaviors.

- Demonstrates a working knowledge of advanced medical procedures and medical terminology.

- Demonstrates excellent interpersonal skills and ability to serve patients, families, clinicians and physicians.

- Provides in person interpretation in all Parkland's locations/settings. May be required to rotate to other areas as needed.

- Provides video and audio interpretation in a call center environment. May be required to rotate to other areas as needed.

- Provides translation of clinical and non-clinical documents, records, and communications across Parkland's full scope of services.

- Maintains acceptable productivity and quality standards as established by management to ensure effective and efficient operations.

- Demonstrates a working knowledge of personal computers, software packages and standard office equipment.

- Successfully completes additional job related training when offered.

- Function in a team environment.

 

Responsibilities

1. Performs medical interpretation duties in person and/or by phone/video for Spanish speaking patients, families, and Parkland employees and contractors across Parkland's full scope of services per the Medical Interpreter Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice. This will be done virtually, in a call center environment, or in the hospital/clinic setting.

2. Performs translation of clinical and non-clinical documents, records, and communications across Parkland's full scope of services.

3. Maintains interpretation and translation quality as demonstrated by routine quality assurance audits.

4. Complies and supports all department standard operating procedures.

5. Meets or exceeds department productivity standards.

6. Assists with training and development activities for new staff to include precepting.

7. Creates and maintains accurate and compliant documentation for the electronic medical record.

 

Job Accountabilities

1. Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.

2. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.

3. Maintains knowledge of applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws and guidelines that impact the area. Develops effective internal controls designed to promote adherence with applicable laws, accreditation agency requirements, and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
