Primary Purpose Responsible for development, implementation and continual process improvement evaluation for Parkland's Clinical Education Programs. Orientation and continuing education programs are designed to ensure that staff is credentialed and able to demonstrate current competencies and meet professional practice standards. This position leads education projects identified through survey analyses and other clinical needs assessments. The Clinical Education Specialist assists peers through the orientation process, serves as a resource and mentor to less experienced Nurse Educators, leads just-in-time trainings in conjunction with colleagues, and develops strong, professional relationships with operational and clinical leaders system-wide.

 

Minimum Specifications

 

Education

- Must have a Master¿s degree of Science in Nursing (MSN) or a related field.

 

Experience

- Must have six (6) years of clinical nursing experience including two years education experience (as RN or formal teacher) and two years recent work in clinical specialty.

 

Equivalent Education and/or Experience

- None

 

Certification/Registration/Licensure

- Must have current, valid RN license or temporary RN license with the Texas Board of Nursing; or, valid Compact RN license.

- Must have current healthcare provider CPR course completion card from one of the following:

  • American Heart Association
  • American Red Cross
  • Military Training Network.

- Must certified as a CPR Instructor or obtain within six months of employment/placement in classification

- Must have (or obtain within 6 months of certification eligibility) one of the following certifications:

  • Registered Nurse-Board Certified (RN-BC)
  • Nurse Executive Advanced-Board Certified (NEA-BC)
  • Certified in Executive Nurse Practice (CENP)
  • Critical Care Registered Nurse (CCRN)
  • Progressive Care Certified Nurse (PCCN)
  • Certified Emergency Nurse (CEN)
  • Certified Nephrology Nurse (CNN)
  • Certified Correctional Health Professional - RN (CCHP-RN)

- Must pass a Microsoft Office PowerPoint and Basic Excel online proficiency test.

- External experienced RNs must pass (80% or above) Clinical Education¿s assigned challenge exam(s).

- Internal experienced RNs changing specialties must pass (80% or above) Clinical Education¿s assigned challenge exam(s).

 

Skills or Special Abilities

- Analyzes work processes and flows for the department and suggests or implements appropriate changes to improve work effectiveness, productivity and efficiency that support the overall goals of Parkland.

- Serves as an instructor or facilitator for system wide educational programs.

- Provides care to assigned patient population in accordance with the current State of Texas Nurse Practice Act, established protocols, multidisciplinary plan of care, and clinical area specific standards.

- Demonstration of solid leadership skills. Must demonstrate the ability to serve as a resource and mentor to others within the Clinical Education Department.

- Must demonstrate and maintain competency in technical and clinical skills in applicable areas as evidenced by functioning in direct patient care at least 50% of their allotted work time. .

- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, presentation skills, interpersonal skills and professional standards. Must be able to demonstrate effective communication. Must have superior writing skills to compose curriculum, including but not limited to course outlines, objectives and presentations.

- Must be able to handle stressful environments and apply de-escalation techniques when needed.

- Must display ability to successfully lead multiple educational projects simultaneously.

- Must have ability to create and maintain organized, confidential and professionally written educational files in multiple venues, including Texas Nurses Association CE documents, consistent with departmental and organizational processes and act in the role of a Nurse Planner for Continuing Education Activities.

- Must be able to establish effective, respectful and collegial working relationships with all internal and external customers including but not limited to peer group, leadership, patients, physicians, employees, student¿s volunteers and vendors.

- Demonstrates proficiency in use of technology as applicable to role.
