Summary Designs and fits devices to provide care to patients who have disabling conditions of the limbs and spine. Responsibilities ¿ Collaborates with healthcare team members to identify patient needs. Reviews prescriptions which specify the types of orthotic appliances to be made to ensure optimal functional use by the patient. Provides education and training to healthcare team members regarding orthotics. ¿ Measures, fabricates and adjusts casts and custom orthotics while ensuring minimal patient discomfort, optimal function, fit, comfort, alignment and appearance for patient in compliance with physician¿s instructions and established procedures. Educates and counsels patient on use of applied device. Documents medical records in a timely manner to ensure record is current. ¿ Maintains knowledge of rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact the Orthotics area. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding. ¿ Identifies ways to improve work processes and improve customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements, and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and PHHS. ¿ Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of Orthotics by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations, and/or maintaining certification or licensure. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices. ¿ Trains, motivates and assists with selection and evaluation of employees. Functions as a work leader providing operational support and supervision of staff, demonstrating a working knowledge of all job responsibilities under his/her leadership. Performs as back up to staff absences and vacancies, as necessary. Requires an understanding of reporting staff's duties. Other duties as assigned. Career Type: Clinical Individual contributors who comes in direct physical contact with patients and have responsibility in a clinical discipline or specialty focused on patient needs and/or delivery of high-quality care. The majority of time is spent on the delivery of clinical care. May spend a portion of their time on implementation or design of clinical processes, programs, services and policies. Senior clinical roles, such as physicians, may also spend ~20% of their overall time on managerial responsibilities; however, the majority of their time is spent on direct patient care. - Requires specialized knowledge gained through a combination of experience and/or advanced clinical education, including licensure and certification - Work follows legally defined scope of practice - Applies clinical knowledge and experience to achieve operational goals and targets and impacts the overall achievement of results for the job area/department/function - Responsible for improving upon existing systems and processes to solve problems in the clinical space - May lead and/or organize the work of other lower level clinical professionals or clinical/technical support, or manage processes and programs Competencies Communication & Influence - Communicates information typically within and outside the department on matters that involve obtaining or providing difficult or sensitive information requiring explanation, interpretation, and consensus-building for patients and others within the care team - Influences others within own department regarding policies, practices and procedures Leadership & Talent Management - Responsible for providing guidance, coaching and training to other employees across the department within area of expertise Organizational Impact - May make improvements to existing clinical approaches, practices, and processes - Executes clinical processes to solve difficult and complex, problems to meet patient needs and/or deliver high-quality care to patients Knowledge & Experience - Viewed as an expert and/or resource within the field by peers within the organization Degree/License - Typically requires a minimum of a bachelor¿s degree and may require a master¿s degree in a related clinical field - Requires clinical license and/or certification typically obtained through advanced education and advanced practical knowledge of job area obtained through extensive clinical experience Education Requirements ¿ Must have a Bachelor¿s degree in Orthotics from a program accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). ¿ Must have completed a residency program supervised by a licensed prosthetist or orthotist. Required Certifications / Licensure ¿ Must have current license with the Texas Board of Orthotics and Prosthetics. Preferred Certifications / Licensure ¿ Prefer certification with The American Board of Certification in Orthotics and Prosthetics
