PRIMARY PURPOSE

Responsible for ensuring Electronic Medical Record health care data is accurate, complete, and concise for information requestors and data users.

 

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS

Education:

- Must have an Associate’s degree from a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) accredited program; OR

- Must have an Associate’s degree in a health care related field.

 

Experience:

- Must have five years of health care related experience.

 

Equivalent Education and/or Experience:

- May have an equivalent combination of education and experience to substitute for both the education and experience requirements.

 

Certification/Registration/Licensure:

- Prefer certification through the American Health Information Management Association as one of the following:

- Registered Health Information Management Administrator (RHIA)

- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)

 

Skills or Special Abilities:

•    Must have strong analytical skills and organizational skills and be detail oriented.
•    Must have a working knowledge of Health Information Management procedures, forms,
•    and content, and be able to comprehend and apply established policy and procedures.
•    Must be able to operate a PC and use spreadsheet, word processing, database, and graphics software.
•    Must be able to demonstrate higher-level decision-making skills.
•    Must be detail oriented and exhibit effective organizational skills.
•    Must have good written and oral communication skills with patients, visitors, and    
     hospital staff.
•    Must be able to demonstrate knowledge regarding HIM computer software, including master patient index, record tracking, deficiency analysis, release of information, and Electronic Medical Record and Personal Health Record applications.
•    Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of medico-legal and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities:

1. Reviews, analyzes, and audits more complex clinical documentation and data in EPIC applications, the Electronic Medical Record, and the paper medical record in order to determine entries into the EMR and EPIC applications are accurate and complete, and to provide information requested by auditors, researchers, regulatory agencies, and other legal requestors. May specialize in a more specific area of reviews.
2. Prepares reports on clinical documentation and data entered into EPIC applications and the Electronic Medical Record. Provides data for Joint Commission Clinical Pertinence Reviews as requested.
3. Analyzes data reports for integrity of data collection and clinical entries on higher level complexity topics.
4. Utilizes knowledge of anatomy, physiology, pharmacology and medico-legal statutes to: analyze clinical documentation of external vendors to ensure service level accuracy; communicate effectively with internal care providers to assist them with medico-legal and regulatory requirements; and, to perform data mining of clinical elements of the medical records.
5. Reviews the Electronic Medical Record entries for integrity of the order of the record, legal EMR guidelines and compliance of documentation with regulatory and Parkland policy and procedure and independently makes decisions about how to address deficiencies.
6. Organizes and participates in discussions about clinical and functional design of information systems/EMR/PHR applications with multidisciplinary teams as needed.
7. Identifies ways to improve work processes and customer satisfaction. Makes recommendations to supervisor, implements and monitors results as appropriate in support of the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
8. Maintains knowledge of Parkland procedures that support applicable rules, regulations, policies, laws, and guidelines that impact Health Information Management. Develops effective internal controls that promote adherence to applicable state/federal laws, and the program requirements of accreditation agencies and federal, state, and private health plans. Seeks advice and guidance as necessary to ensure proper understanding.
9. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements, and trends in the field of Health Information Management by attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, and actively participating in professional organizations. Integrates knowledge gained into current work practices.
10. Meets productivity, timeliness, and quality standards and goals set by the HIM Division. Provides data for monitoring productivity and outcomes through maintenance of spreadsheets, databases and other documentation procedures.
11. This position is 100% Virtual. Virtual employees must also comply with all Parkland policies and procedures governing the use of Parkland information resources. Virtual employees must maintain all equipment lent by Parkland for performing the agreed upon job duties in good working condition. All employment responsibilities and conditions in applicable Parkland policies and procedures apply to employees while working virtually.

Seeks advice and guidance as needed to ensure proper understanding.
