PRIMARY PURPOSE Responsible for the direction of specific Pharmacy Service Business Units within the health system with regard to operations, patient safety, fiscal accountability, new initiatives, procedure development and enforcement, expansion of pharmacy services, logistical issues and supervision and direction of assigned managers and staff.

 

MINIMUM SPECIFICATIONS

 

Education

- Must have completed a BS or Doctor of Pharmacy Degree Program.

- Master's degree in pharmacy, Business, or Health Care Administration from an accredited university preferred.

- Completion of an American Society of Health System Pharmacy PGY1 Residency and PGY2 Health System Pharmacy Administration & Leadership Residency preferred.

 

Experience

- Minimum four (4) years of pharmacy management experience in addition to two (2) years of residency training & master's degree OR minimum six (6) years of management experience in a large health care system if no residency training or master's degree.

 

Certification/Registration/Licensure

- Must be a registered pharmacist in the State of Texas.

 

Skills or Special Abilities

- Must have good communication skills, both oral and written.

- Must have excellent computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, database, and specialized programs

- Must be able to demonstrate a current knowledge of pharmacy technology and procedures.

- Must have excellent management skills.

- Must be capable of recruiting, developing, and motivating people.

- Must be able to think creatively and strategically, in order to develop and implement systems and procedures.

- Must be eligible residency preceptor per the requirements of the American Society of Health System Pharmacy.

 

Responsibilities

1. Directs safe and effective operations of business unit(s) in the Pharmacy Department for inpatient, outpatient, and/or correctional health patient care areas. Ensures operational and logistical support for all medication management services according to current best practices.

2. Coordinates "regulatory" readiness" for their pharmacy business units) with all collaborating departments and enterprise groups such as The Joint Commission education team, performance improvement, and regulatory. Works with other departments that have medication management in their areas e.g. Radiology, Nutrition, Respiratory Therapy, Nursing an Medical Staff to maintain a state of continual readiness for various regulatory surveys i.e. The Joint Commission, FDA, Board of Pharmacy, DEA, DNV, etc.

3. Provides strategic leadership direction through developing, implementing and sustaining annual goals and objectives that support the mission, enterprise strategy, direction, and goals of Parkland.

4. Develops and enhances the department's leadership team to effectively and efficiently manage daily operations and enhance processes, outcomes, and productivity.

5. Develops and sustains established capital and operating budget goals to enhance processes, outcomes, and productivity.

6. Oversees and has ultimate responsibility for the recruitment, selection, orientation and training, disciplinary actions, and retention of department staff to ensure maximum utilization of individual and group capabilities to enhance process, outcomes, and productivity. Ensures that all employees receive opportunities to further their knowledge and integrate these enhancements into improvements at Parkland.

7. Oversees and has ultimate responsibility for meeting or exceeding all rules, regulations, policies, procedures, guidelines and laws that impact or govern the department and Parkland.

8. Works strategically with clinical and financial teams, management, vendors, other hospitals, and employees to cooperatively achieve outcomes that support the mission, enterprise strategy, direction, and goals of Parkland.

9. Oversees and has ultimate responsibility for working with department personnel, government reimbursement and other business departments to ensure appropriate charge development and billing practices. Responsible for communicating, implementing, and improving the code of ethics and billing compliance.

10. Stays abreast of the latest developments, advancements and trends in the fields of Pharmacy, patient safety and regulatory requirements attending seminars/workshops, reading professional journals, actively participating in professional organizations with the goal of integrating this knowledge to advance Pharmacy Services and Patient Safety practices at Parkland.

11. Identifies and analyzes the design of jobs, work processes, workflows, etc. for the Pharmacy Department and implements appropriate changes to improve effectiveness, productivity, and efficiency that support the overall goals of the department and Parkland.
